Abstract

Developing speaking skills in a foreign language is considered a daunting task for most language learners. Most students assume not to have enough vocabulary to speak. They are also shy and afraid of making mistakes in speaking English. Most students also appear insecure about expressing their point of view. As a result, they are unable to speak fluently. This journal tries to provide further investigation regarding the effects of Pair Counting techniques  to increase students' vocabulary, especially in describing objects. Previous research has shown that Pair Counting is a fast, easy, and interactive way to improve students' fluency and grammar in speaking. However, the results of the study were not specifically reported by presenting detailed findings. This mixed methods research tries to observe and interpret various forms of data taken from the utterance recording of 7th grade of Junior High School students relating to describing objects in three phases and in limited time. The results in each phase are compared to see if there is a significant increase in student vocabulary. This study shows an increase in the vocabulary of 9 groups of students from a total of 10 groups. This increase resulted from an increase in the number of vocabulary in several phases. This finding strengthens the understanding to consider certain techniques in increasing students' vocabulary.
